Side Effect(2013): B (7/10)
Appeal: Very High
Well made movie that switches genres effectively.

Snitch(2013): B- (6/10)
Appeal: High
Best acting I have ever seen from Dwayne Johnson. That's not saying a whole lot, but it is good. Overall, the movie started out strong, but went off the rails a bit towards the end.

Enjoyable if unimpressive. Loved the initial invasion set piece. Plot holes were very difficult to ignore. Sfx are noticeably bad. It jars you out of the movie.

Oblivion(2013): D+ (4/10)
Appeal: Low
Surprisingly dull for much of the movie. Overall, a good story poorly told. Beautiful visuals help make the movie a bit more palatable.

G.I. Joe: Retaliation(2013): D (3/10)
Appeal: Low
Managed to turn G.I. Joe into a boiler-plate action movie. Bad plot. Poorly directed action sequences. Bruce Willis stuck out like a sore thumb.

A Good Day To Die Hard (Die Hard 5)(2013): D- (2/10)
Appeal: Very Low
Complete car wreck of a movie. Commits a Die Hard Cardinal Sin: poor/un-interesting villain.

The Alex Cross (2012) Review

Alex Cross(2012):C-/D+ (4/10)
The cast is the best part of this movie. Tyler Perry isn't bad as Alex Cross. Matthew Fox works as the creepy antagonist. John C. McGinley is used well in a limited role. Ed Burns, however, is wasted. The film starts as a straight crime thriller, and works for a while at that level, including a strong assassination attempt sequence. Eventually, the film veers into a more emotional/psychological direction, and there it plainly fails. Also, the dialogue was sub-par throughout, and the production values were inferior to some of the better procedural network shows on air today. Without spoilers, let me just note that the movie's conclusion struct a jarringly off note for me.
Appeal: D
I can't say I'd recommend people watching movie even on cable tv in five years. There's nothing special about it. It has glaring flaws. I am a particular fan of crime thrillers, and Alex Cross wasn't hard to sit through. But I think most people coming out of the theater, if they make it through the whole thing, will either be shrugging their shoulders or holding their nose.

Movie Ratings: 2012

MOVIES FOR ADULTS
Safe House(2012): B+ (8/10)
Appeal: High
This movie took itself more seriously than I thought it would, and that worked out to its credit. Denzel kills, of course. The surprise is the performance Ryan Reynolds puts in, and the chemistry between the two leads.

Prometheus (2012): B (7/10)
Appeal: High
I very much wanted to like this movie more than I did. There's a lot to like: Interesting themes, awesome visuals, developed characters...But I think it is a movie that serves too many masters. It tries to be a lot of things and doesn't get any right-enough to make it great.

Premium Rush (2012): B (7/10)
Appeal: High
[notes]

The Bourne Legacy (2012): B (7/10)
Appeal: Average
Know, going in, that it is essentially a chase movie. Having said that, it is a good chase movie. Just expect next to nothing in terms of Bourne mythology.

Looper (2012): B (7/10)
Appeal: High
Good but not great. Takes itself seriously (which is why it is in this category) and plays it as straight as it can considering the material. A lot of the scenes lacked pop and felt like connect-the-dots pieces.

Lincoln(2012): B (7/10)
Appeal: High
Slow and over-long, but filled with great acting and good film craft.

Seeking A Friend For The End Of The World (2012): B (7/10)
Appeal: Average
[notes]

Haywire(2012): B- (6/10)
Appeal: Average
Barely a B, this movie won me over with craft with which it was made and specifically Soderberg's interesting directorial decisions. However, it can be fairly critiqued as being about absolutely nothing except how badass Gina Cerano is.

Magic Mike (2012): B- (6/10)

Skyfall(2012): B- (6/10)

The Campaign (2012): B+ (8/10)
Appeal: High
[notes]

The Cabin In The Woods(2012): B+ (8/10)
Appeal: 60% (-genre bender)
Very enjoyable campy horror. Starts slow, and as I watched it, the humorous dialogue wasn't working for me. But the second half of the movie kills.

Avengers (2012): B (7/10)
Appeal: 80% (+iconic chars; +movie event)
Great set piece at the end. Great hero-to-hero dialogue, especially between Iron Man and anybody else. However, Loki was not a compelling villain, and the overall story was not very interesting. The movie was a bit over-long as well.

Lockout(2012): B (7/10)
Appeal: 50% (-B-movie ish feel; -odd story structure)
This move has a lot to like about it but plenty of flaws as well. Guy Pierce's performance in the lead is the #1 reason to see the film. The rest of the casting is strong as well. The setting and special effects are a plus too. The novice directing is a downside, as well as a strange third-act that I can't dissect without spoilers.

21 Jump Street(2012): B (7/10)
Appeal: 70%
First half much funnier than second half. Great set-pieces that matched the tone of the film. The movie took itself just a little too seriously. Loved Ice Cube's supporting role. He was used just the right amount.

The Dark Knight Rises (2012): B-/C+ (6/10)
Appeal: 50% (-overlong; -plotting;-story issues)
A must-see for the sake of the trilogy, but perhaps the worst Chris Nolan movie. A very messy plot that takes a long time to develop. The set-pieces weren't up to par. About the only thing it really got right was being a proper thematic bookend to the trilogy.

Total Recall (2012): B-/C+ (6/10)
Appeal: 50% (-inferior remake)
Loved the original but I tried to take this one at its own merits. For that, I enjoyed it, but it is clearly inferior, despite the stunning visuals.

Battleship (2012): B-/C+ (6/10)
Appeal: 50% (-acting)
Only thing I liked about it was the big battles, but they were nice and covered most of the second half of the movie.

Wraith of the Titans (2012): B-/C+ (6/10)
Appeal: 50%
Despite the shlock, I liked it.

Contraband(2012): B-/C+ (6/10)
Appeal: 60%
I enjoyed this movie despite the glaring plot holes (PLURAL) and the flimsy-ness of the villains. Walberg is a bit too badass for the movie's sake. Awesome set-piece set in Rio De Janiero that was my favorite part of the movie.

The Watch (2012): B-/C+ (6/10)
Appeal: 50% (-overly silly)
I did not think this movie would be good and only watched it on a lark (for 2 bucks). But it was funny, and pretty coherent of a narrative. Has some decent character development stuff.

The Amazing Spider-Man (2012): B-/C+ (6/10)
Appeal: 70% (+iconic character)
Liked the new actor as Spidey over Toby Maguire, but I didn't like the story very much.

Dredd (2012): B-/C+ (6/10)
Appeal: 50% (-lack of char dev;-B movie-ish)
[notes]

The Hunger Games(2012): C (5/10)
Appeal: 60%
I think maybe the filmmakers should have had a little more fun with the story. This telling is very dry and by-the-numbers. Felt like filmmaking by committee, no risk and no vision (just do what the book says). The story is good, but the movie bored me.

Underworld Awakening(2012): C (5/10)
Appeal: 40%
This movie just goes from start to finish. Doesn't take time to really establish itself. Watching it, I felt disconnected/unattached to what was going on. It did have very enjoyable set-pieces, including the conclusion.

The Expendables 2(2012): C (5/10)
Appeal: 40%

Snow White and the Huntsman (2012): C (5/10)

Movie Ratings: 2011

MOVIES FOR ADULTS

Rise of the Planet of the Apes(2011): B+ (8/10)
Appeal: 80%
Daring enough to make the Ape, Caeser, the protagonist. Franco does a solid job, but he is a supporting player. The movie starts relatively slow but has a lot of narrative pipe to lay. The whole movie is a setup for the big 3rd act. And the 3rd Act was very good. There are a few ridiculous character behaviors to keep the story moving, but it doesn't ruin it for me.

The Ides of March (2011): B+ (8/10)
Appeal: 80%
I may have liked this movie more than the average person because of my intellectual interest in American politics.

The King's Speech (2011): B+ (8/10)
Appeal: 90% (+filmcraft)
Incredible performance by Colin Firth. Geffroy Rush, Guy Pierce et al. put in strong performances as well. Fine filmmaking all around. Scenes that could have otherwise dragged on popped.

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo(2011): B+ (8/10)
Appeal: 70%(-Slow Pace)
Well written, acted, and directed. Plods along a bit early but I remained engaged. The mystery made for a good reveal, but their method of solving it was underwhelming. The third act of the movie was excellent.

Unknown(2011): B+ (8/10)
Appeal: 70%
Despite catching on to the twist early, it remained an engaging thriller. I'm getting Liam Neison burnout but it didn't stop me from liking the movie. Lots of good acting. Well done action scenes. Better than Taken for me.

The Company Men (2011): B+ (8/10)
Appeal: 70%(-TV Movie Feel)
Well done quiet drama. Second half of second act lags. I actually liked Ben Affleck here along with most of the other actors. Affleck was well cast. Makes me wonder if the role was written for him. Liked Kevin Costner in it too.

Super 8(2011): B+ (8/10)
Appeal: 70% (-Slow Pace)
Well made. Great acting, great directing, good script. Checked my watch at the end of the 2nd act (so it lagged for me there). I wish I could have liked this movie more. It deserves whatever accolades it gets.

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy(2011): B (7/10)
Appeal: 60%(-Extremely slow pace)
This is a super-slow movie. You have to really be patient. But you will be rewarded with a good story, nuanced performances and fulfilling resolution.

The Source Code(2011): B (7/10)
Appeal: 80%(+Unique Concept)
Not quite the movie you expect from the promos. I enjoyed watching it, but nothing about it was particularly good. Just a solid sci-fi film all around.

Moneyball(2011): B (7/10)
Appeal: 70%
Great acting and dialogue. Much less of a sports movie than anticipated. Oddly staged baseball sequences that didn't work for me. Slow second act (middle). Unlike some, I liked the ending.

Contagion (2011): B (7/10)
Appeal: 60%(-Grim Tone)
Text.

Drive(2011): B (7/10)
Appeal: 60% (-Lack of dialogue)
A quiet movie that is not at all about a guy who drives cars for criminals. This is a loner falls in love (and thereby complicates life) movie. And it is executed pretty well. There are moments of excitement and danger, but as in real life, they are brief, jarring and consequential.

Cedar Rapids(2011): B-/C+ (6/10)
Appeal: 60%

Small scale quirky comedy. Just quietly enjoyable. John C. Reilly is the movie's greatest asset.
Friends with Benefits(2011): B-/C+ (6/10)
Appeal: 60%
Make no mistake, this is a Mila Kunis movie. It was sold as a dual leads movie, but hers is the performance to watch. Timberlake, who I loved in the Social Network, is a dud dramatically. He's funny, but he doesn't hold up his end in the important character moments. I appreciated how low key the story was; how small events affected the characters profoundly.

Battle Los Angeles(2011): B-/C+ (6/10)
Appeal: 60%
A war movie that happens to be us versus aliens. Lots of war movie cliche, but I wasn't bothered by most of it. Aaron Eckhart has great gravitas.

Hanna (2011): B-/C+ (6/10)

Crazy Stupid Love (2011): B-/C+ (6/10)

The Artist(2011): B-/C+ (6/10)
Appeal: 60%
Great (silent) performances by almost everyone. The weakness is the story. It's odd and it is paced poorly. And that didn't have to be the case. The bottom line is that I like the first half, and mostly loathed the second half.
The Debt(2011): C (5/10)
Appeal: 50%
Not a bad movie, but I didn't enjoy it much. I didn't find the acting performances very engaging, and I didn't like where the plot went. My reaction to the movie's third act: "WTF."

MOVIES FOR OUR INNER CHILD

Bridesmaids(2011): B+ (8/10)
Appeal: 90%(+Broad Comedy)
Very good comedy. The laughs, for me, came it fits and spurts, but overall, it works at the comedy level and a dramatic level too (like 40 Year Old Virgin did). 2nd half of 2nd Act dragged a bit to me. This movie is long for a comedy (almost 2 hours even).

Captain America: The First Avenger(2011): B+ (8/10)
Appeal: 70%
Well done comic-book movie that will infuriate some people with the "liberties" it takes with logic and storytelling. I was kinda bugged by 'Caps' sudden martial abilities after being given the super-soldier serum. Hugo Weaving's performance as the Red Skull was excellent, better than his 'Agent Smith'. Chris Evans worked as Captain America despite my misgivings. I did not like the previews of this film but it truly surprised me. Very good set pieces.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Pt. 2(2011): B+ (8/10)
Appeal: 80%
Second half of the movie is a great payoff for the entire series. However, this was not the best made of the eight films. The first half is slow and even a bit aimless.

Horrible Bosses(2011): B (7/10)
Appeal: 80%(+High Concept)
Funny but not as funny as you would expect from the preview. The bad behavior of the bosses is not center stage. It's in the three guys responding to the situations they get themselves in to. Character behavior is inconsistant. Movie doesn't take itself or its story very seriously. Aniston seemed under-used compared with Farrell and Spacey.

Fast Five(2011): B (7/10)
Appeal: 60%(-Silly Premise)
Great ending takes it over the top. Enjoyed F&F 4 more throughout, but 5's ending much better. Great epilogue(s) after 1st part of credits too.

X-Men First Class (2011): B (7/10)
Appeal: 80% (+iconic characters)
Text TBD.

Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol (4)(2011): B (7/10)
Appeal: 70%
Definitely better than the last one, though I remember liking MI:2 more when I first saw it (now, it feels dated). A solid flick with some good character development stuff. I think it got over-hyped because of how slickly it was made.

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows(2011): B (7/10)
Appeal: %
Loved the first one. Only liked this one. The performances of the leads was at the usual high standard. Moriarty, as portrayed in the film, was underwhelming. The plot and mystery of this film was inferior to the first. The Holmes-Moriarty confrontation was done well.

A Very Harold and Kumar Christmas (2011): B (7/10)
Appeal: 60% (-very dirty humor)
Text.

The Lincoln Lawyer(2011): B (7/10)
Appeal: 70%
Having read the book hurt my enjoyment of the movie, I think, because I remember so much of the plot and twists. However, there was a lot of good performances, esp. McConaughey, who killed. Didn't like Ryan Philippe very much as the defendant, though he had one particularly good scene.

The Tower Heist (2011): B (7/10)
Appeal: 60% (-odd tone for a comedy)
It gets this grade because of how funny it is, the brisk plotting (once it gets going) and the performances of the principles. Interesting choice to play the main story straight, despite the overall comedic tone, to make Stiller's character sincerely motivated. Biggest flaw of this film is the holes in the  heist staging. Don't think about it too much. There are several things very wrong with it, especially related to timing.

Immortals (2011): B (7/10)
Appeal: 60% (-CGI overload,-mostly no name actors, B-movie feel)
Text.

Real Steel(2011): B (7/10)
Appeal: 70%
Saw on IMAX one day 'cause I was bored. Pleasantly surprised. Robot fight scenes were done very well. Hugh Jackman and the kid actor have great chemistry. It could fairly be described as the usual Hollywood tripe, but cliche can still work if it is done well. Though more than a little over the top, it is done well here.

The Hangover, Part II(2011): B-/C+ (6/10)
Appeal: 60%
Get's off to a good (and funny) start, but it is only intermittently funny throughout. Focus of the movie is on big shocks. Not that they weren't trying, but the dialogue just isn't nearly as good (this sequel lacks the original's almost continuously amusing nature). There are some good moments and well made scenes but some of the material just didn't work for me. I was also disappointed at how narrow the story focus was on Stu. The original was just a much richer movie in every way.

Your Highness(2011): B-/C+ (6/10)

Rango(2011): B-/C+ (6/10)

Quirky animated western. Funny in spots, but I wish it had been funnier. I really liked the ending. Too long a movie also.

Green Lantern(2011): B-/C+ (6/10)
Appeal: 50% (-geeky)
For comic geeks only. Complicated story. Some characters developed better than others. I liked the story despite its flaws and Ryan Reynolds does a good job. This barely gets the B-/C+.

Hall Pass (2011): C (5/10)
Appeal: 40% (-starts very poorly)
Kinda funny but lacked momentum. The movie is just kinda there and putters along until the end of the second act (about in hour in). Sudakis and Wilson played their roles as caricatures of dorky husbands. Energetic, funny conclusion saves film from being what I would call "bad".

Pirates of the Caribbean 4: On Stranger Tides(2011): C (5/10)
Appeal: 60%
Pales in comparison to first three dramatically. I think this was the worst of the series (Dead Man's Chest may not have been much better). Sword fights not nearly as good as I remembered the trilogy having.

Liked the action sequences and the story was decent, if a bit odd. But the plot does not justify movie length. Pretty weak acting all around (Anthony Hopkins mailed it in; Portman had little to do; Exception was actor playing Loki).

In Time (2011): C-/D+  (4/10)
Appeal: 40%
Weak third act.

Scream 4(2011): C-/D+ (4/10)
Appeal: 40%
The first truly disappointing movie of the year that I took the effort to see in the theater. The casting of the next generation of Scream teens was terrible. The girl playing Sidney's cousin was particularly bad. The opening was the worst of the four movies, for me, though a small minority will probably like it. The middle of the film had some good moments and I was kinda entertained throughout. But I had a serious problem suspending disbelief for some of the stupid things that happened, especially the ending. Liked the first half of the movie more than the second half.

Movie Review/Breakdown: Public Enemies (2009) - Full Spoilers

Type of Movie - True Anti-Hero Movie; At one level it is a boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy gets girl again role.
Notes:
-Johnny Depp Excellent - One of his best
-Good amount of exciting action scenes with real weight to them; People good and bad, die.
-J. Edgar Hoover and Old FBI Man are strong minor characters
-Christian Bale role waaay under-written and performance is flat
-Movie is a bit too long for the content; it ebbs and flows
-Liked the rich quantity of characters
-Bank robberies were OK but underwhelming
-Story structure is subtle
-Dillenger character development is undersold.
-Sometimes you don't know where the movie is going.
Act I: Establish Characters, Dillenger falls in love but still lives for the thrill
End of Act I: Dillenger captured

On Second Look - 24 Day 4: Episode 1 (7 to 8 AM)

One great innovation (or tool, if somebody else did it first) of 24 is the fast forward that occurs in between seasons. It allows a new, mysterious continuum to form and then be discovered piece by piece by the viewer. This episode begins to reveal that new continuum while setting events in motion. I like that. The first episode should be filled with hints and teases.
I forgot how bad the dialogue and acting was on 24. Even Jack Bauer and Cloe absolutely murder some of their lines.

LUDICROUS MOMENT: A suspect has been brought into CTU regarding a terrorist attack that has just occurred. There is also chatter about a possible 8AM attack. Jack Bauer is no longer with CTU but is visiting in his role as laison for the Secretary of Defense. After less than five minutes of interrogation by CTU, Jack takes it upon himself to not only break into the interrogation room holding the suspect and lock himself in there with him, but then, after failing to illicit information via yelling and table throwing, SHOOTS the suspect in the leg AND THEN begin TORTURING him by digging the tip of his pistol into the suspect's wound. Jack is incredulous when CTU actually takes him into custody after he does this.

On Second Look - 24 Day 4: Introduction

I very fondly remember Day/Season 4 of the Fox series 24. I picked it up from Target for twenty bucks a few days ago and I've started watching it (I haven't seen it since the initial run, about five years ago). And I've decided to blog about each episode as I watch it. I've watched almost three episodes so far and I'm struck by the mix of AWESOME moments with LUDICROUS moments. 24 is a show of extremes, and as part of my blogging, I will be highlighting them.

Quick Review: MacGruber (2010)

What do I say about MacGruber? Best to start with the fact that it has almost nothing to do with the SNL sketch that shares its name. MacGruber the sketch was and is a send-up of the McGyver TV series. MacGruber the movie is a broad send-up of action movies. The character of MacGruber is performed the same by Will Forte in both versions and specializes in quirky bomb-making and general ineptitude in both versions. As for the movie, it has a couple of hilarious moments, a couple other bits that fail brutally, and still others that one could feel either way about. The, how should I say, joke-density is a bit low for a comedy, especially early on. The movie makes a bad first impression that way. I thought it was headed for disaster before a couple gut busters saved it from complete ruin. It's a silly, dirty movie that you'll probably feel embarrassed for enjoying at all: C

Quick Review: The Hurricane

I finally watched the The Hurricane (bought it from Big!Lots for three bucks). It was good but I was a little underwhelmed by the storytelling. Denzel was the best part of it: B-

Movie Ratings: 2010

MOVIES FOR ADULTS

Toy Story 3(2010): A+/A (10/10)
Appeal: 100%
Exciting, funny and touching. My favorite of the trilogy.

Inception(2010): A+/A (10/10)
Appeal: 90% (-confusing)
Unique, clever, fun and engaging.

Date Night(2010): A- (9/10)
Appeal: 100% (+broad appeal)
I laughed a lot. And I connected with the relationship themes and dialogue.

The Fighter(2010): A- (9/10)
Appeal: 90%
Amazing performances. I connected with the internal struggle of the main character. Mark Walberg wasn't bad, but wasn't very good either. He didn't have nearly as much to "do" as the other main players.

The Next 3 Days(2010): B+ (8/10)
Appeal: 80%
Almost constantly harrowing and/or gut-wrenching. Very engaging. Just don't think too hard about the plot.

Black Swan(2010): B+ (8/10)
Appeal: 90% (+unique,-confusing)
Unique story. Great acting. Movie is a slow starter but has a good 2nd act and 3rd act pay-off. Scarier than you would expect.

The Town(2010): B (7/10)
Appeal: 80% (+mass appeal)
As much a Drama as a Heist Film. I liked it but I would have preferred Affleck stay behind the camera on this one.

Shutter Island(2010): B (7/10)
Appeal: 70%
[notes]

The King's Speech(2010): B (7/10)
Appeal: 80%
Great performance by Colin Firth. A strong performance from Geoffrey Rush. Additional strong performances by supporting cast. Slow starting movie with a great finale.

The Social Network(2010): B-/C+ (6/10)
Appeal: 70% (+interesting true story)
Strong dialogue, a captivating underlying story, and good performances couldn't hide a meandering plot and a weak character arc for the main character, Mark Zuckerberg.

Buried(2010): B-/C+ (6/10)
Appeal: 50%
Well made but not very pleasant to watch. You really have to be in the right state of mind to sit through this.

True Grit(2010): B-/C+ (6/10)
Appeal: 70%
I loved the performance of Hailee Steinfeld. I liked Jeff Bridges' performance once I got used to it. Didn't really like Matt Damon's. I also didn't like the story (what happened) or plotting (how it was told) very much. I never seem to like Coen Brothers movies as much as some but I always appreciate their film making skill.

Green Zone(2010): D (3/10)
Appeal: 30%
I found it to be a dull movie.

MOVIES FOR OUR INNER CHILD

Shrek Forever After(2010): B+ (8/10)
Appeal: %
Hilarious. Better than the 3rd one.

The Crazies(2010): B+ (8/10)
Appeal: 80%
Well plotted Zombie fun.

The Losers(2010): B (7/10)
Appeal: 70%
I just saw it for the second time and I still enjoyed it despite a story that didn't really make sense and several corny moments. Good plotting of a silly story. A lot of the performances were good. Jason Patric worked as the evil villain.

The A-Team(2010): B (7/10)
Appeal: 60% (-Over the top action)
[notes]

Megamind(2010): B (7/10)
Appeal: %
[notes]

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Pt. 1(2010): B (7/10)
Appeal: 80% (+mythology)
Despite iffy plotting and unnecessary length, I found the characters and story very engaging.

Knight and Day(2010): B (7/10)
Appeal: 60% (-lack of chemistry)
Cheesy fun. Even though he generally weirds me out now, I didn't mind Tom Cruise here. He and Diaz have zero chemistry but it doesn't matter. This isn't a movie to take seriously. Just sit back and enjoy the gun play, stunts and amusing, if silly, dialogue.

Clash Of The Titans(2010): B (7/10)
Appeal: %
It's a silly fantasy film but the filmmakers had fun with it. It worked for me despite its numerous flaws.

Dinner for Schmucks(2010):B (7/10)
Very funny parts and Steve Carell kills. However, the movie is overly long with pace and plotting issues. The "dinner" referred to in the title is in the third act (i.e. the end of the movie). Knowing that going in may help your enjoyment.

Iron Man 2(2010): B (7/10)
Appeal: 60%
As compared to the first: Better Villain(s); Better Action; Worse Story; Much Worse Plotting; Worse James Rhodes (Sorry Don Cheadle). Hard to say which is better to me.

The Other Guys(2010): B-/C+ (6/10)
Appeal: 70% (+charismatic performances)
I wanted to like it more but my enjoyment of the movie fluctuated greatly.

Hot Tub Time Machine(2010): B-/C+ (6/10)
Appeal: 60%
Funny in spots with a decent story to go with it.

Lottery Ticket(2010): B-/C+ (6/10)
Appeal: %
Nothing great about this movie, but I found it easy to watch, and amusing enough.

Robin Hood(2010): B-/C+ (6/10)
Appeal: 60%
[notes]

MacGruber(2010): B-/C+ (6/10)
Appeal: 30% (-utter stupidity)
Had a few very funny parts (and I mean very funny) and a bunch of awkwardly unfunny parts. This movie is utter stupidity and I couldn't recommend it to anybody. But I kinda enjoyed it. By the way, the movie starts slow with strangely few jokes.

Salt(2010): B-/C+ (6/10)
Appeal: 60%
[notes]

Resident Evil: Afterlife(2010): B-/C+ (6/10)
Appeal: %
Silly action sci-fi but it puts a smile on my face.

Tron: Legacy (2010): B-/C+ (6/10)
Appeal: 70% (+mythology)
So much less interesting than I hoped, despite passable story and action. A sense of wonder or amazement is completely lacking. A very hollywood/by-the-numbers movie.

Takers (2010): B-/C+ (6/10)
Appeal: 50%
Plenty of bad acting and heist movie cliche, but I enjoyed the fast plotting, slick directing and TI's comically bad acting.

Death At A Funeral(2010):B-/C+ (6/10)
Though it seemed like an ensemble piece, it ultimately felt like a Chris Rock vehicle. His character is the clear dramatic focal point and also has the most punchlines. Rock does a better than expected job, only embarrassing himself (via poor acting) once or twice. Martin Lawrence, on the other hand, is wasted. Very few jokes, and the material he has isn't very good. It's mostly irritating and/or uncomfortable. Still, I laughed a fair bit and the movie doesn't overstay its welcome. There's a lot going on, and some of it is pretty good. Be warned, the movie's first act is its funniest. Kevin Hart only has one scene but it's a good one.

Unstoppable(2010): C (5/10)
Appeal: 60%
Despite its perpetually moving plot, I was bored at times. Loved Denzel's acting, and much of the other actors' acting, except for Chris Pine's.

Repo Man(2010): C (5/10)
Appeal: 50%
I liked the allegorical sci-fi story at the heart of the movie. Forrest Whitaker was well cast and was a highlight for me. However, I did not like some of the plotting. The movie was overly gory as well. And I had mixed feelings about the ending.

The Book of Eli(2010): C (5/10)
Appeal: %
Didn't dislike it, but I wanted to like it so much more. Utterly underwhelmed by the whole affair.

Predators(2010): C (5/10)
Appeal: 60% (+mythology)
Good beginning and end. 2nd Act (middle) ultimately didn't amount to much. Fishbourne has one good scene.

Grown Ups(2010): C (5/10)
Appeal: 50%
A pleasant experience with very little story.

Daybreakers(2010): C-/D+ (4/10)
Appeal: 40%
N/A

Saw 3D (2010): D (3/10)
Appeal: %
I don't think anybody involved in this move really gave a shit about it. That's how I felt leaving the theater after. And I've been a fan of the series, until now.

Cop Out(2010): D-/F+ (2/10)
Appeal: %
Mostly garbage. A few laughs.
